Following his expulsion from Nepali Congress, General Secretary Gagan Thapa delivered a fiery address at the venue of the ongoing Special General Convention, expressing deep outrage over the party establishment's decision.
Reacting to the news that the Central Working Committee (CWC) had removed him, fellow General Secretary Bishwa Prakash Sharma, and Joint General Secretary Farmullah Mansur, Thapa questioned the authority of the current leadership.
"I heard the news that the Central Working Committee meeting expelled two General Secretaries and a Joint General Secretary. Is this party a private company that you can just kick people out of?" Thapa asked defiantly. "Did you expel us from your own house?"
Thapa highlighted his lifelong commitment to the party, reminding supporters of his long history in political activism. "I have been carrying the Nepali Congress flag since I was in the 9th grade. I fought in the 1990 (2046 BS) People’s Movement and I led the 2006 (2062/63 BS) movement," he stated.
Claiming the "authentic" Congress
Addressing the legitimacy of the rival convention, Thapa pointed to the massive turnout of party representatives as proof of his faction's strength.
Thapa noted that 2,488 general convention representatives were gathered at the hall in Bhrikuti Mandap. He challenged the establishment faction’s monopoly on institutional processes, asking, "Do you think you are the only ones who know how to deal with the Election Commission?" Claiming the mantle of the party's founders, Thapa asserted, "We are the true descendants of Ganesh Man Singh and BP Koirala -- the one who carry the character and ideology of Nepali Congress
The statement signals Thapa’s intent to not only contest the expulsion but also to challenge the very legitimacy of the current party leadership in the eyes of the law and the public.
