The land belonging to the Nepali Embassy in Rajagiriya, Colombo, Sri Lanka, has been found to have been sold twice to private individuals.
On May 18, 1989, 1.5 acres (11.93 ropani) of land had been purchased at a cost of US$ 360,000 to establish the Nepali Embassy in Rajagiriya. Currently, this land is unused.
According to the Sri Lankan government valuation, the current value of the land is US$ 6.5 million (about Rs 1 billion). However, the embassy has not yet received the land ownership certificate.
While searching the government agency managing the land in Sri Lanka, the embassy found that one acre (7.95 ropani) of the land in the name of the Nepal government had been sold to private individuals twice as of May 9, 1994.
The Office of the Auditor General has directed the government to bring the land under the ownership of the Nepal government and protect and utilize it.
