Nepali Congress President Gagan Thapa has said that the provincial assembly will not be formed without an opposition. He argued that the three parties should not form a government in the province.
Speaking at the unveiling of the statue of saint leader Krishna Prasad Bhattarai and the inauguration of the 44th BP Memorial Week in Lalitpur on Sunday, President Thapa emphasized that the arrival of a new generation in the party and their meaningful participation are inevitable.
Stating that the two generations before him and the two generations after him are active within the party, Thapa said that NC should have the ability to connect all generations just as it worked as a force to unite all castes and languages in the past.
"When three parties form a government together, the provincial assembly will become without an opposition," he said. "That goes against the mandate of the people, NC will categorically reject such a proposal."
He claimed that NC will no longer compromise on principles for the sake of power. "We will not repeat the mistakes of the past for the sake of power," he said.
Admitting that NC had made some mistakes in the past for the sake of power, Thapa expressed his commitment not to follow such a path now. "The politics since 2072 has become unstable and directionless due to the mindset of considering power as everything," Thapa said.
"The role of the government and the opposition has become ambiguous due to the tendency to form an alliance with one party before the election and form a government with another after the election," Thapa said. "Now, politics should move forward based on principles and democratic values, respecting the mandate."
