Monsoon mayhem in Koshi: Two killed in Khotang; many roads disrupted

Two people have died in floods in Khotang district after heavy rains. The deceased have been identified as Shanda Rai, 43, of Diktel Majhuwadhi Municipality-3, Nerpa, and Parshuram Pariyar, 71, of Kepilasgadhi-4, Baksila.

Shanda was swept away while trying to cross the Chhange revulet. According to Khotang Chief District Officer (CDO) Rekha Kandel, she was swept away by the river while returning from her relatives' house.

When she did not return home until late, locals searched for her and found her body in the swollen Chhange revulet.

According to the CDO Kandel, Parshuram Pariyar, 71, of Kepilasgadhi-4, Baksila, died when she was swept away by the Gaikhure Kholsi. She was swept away by the Kholsi and carried 100 meters downstream. Later, her family and locals found her dead. Meanwhile, public transport has been suspended on the Chakhewa-Diktel-Jayaramghat road and other subsidiary roads in the district under the Mid-Hill Highway.

Many roads in the eastern hilly region have been blocked after continuous heavy rains.

The Mechi Highway has been blocked after a landslide in Rajduwali, Ilam. Several main and subsidiary roads in Ilam, Panchthar, Taplejung, Khotang, and Dhankuta have been blocked. According to the District Administration Office, Dhankuta, vehicles have been blocked on the Bhedetar-Rabi-Ranke road section.
