By-election: Silence period starting midnight today

The silence period for the April 23 by-election is starting from midnight today.

 With the silence period coming into effect, all kinds of election-related publicity and campaigns will be prohibited.

 The by-election is being in three electoral constituencies – Tahanun-1, Chitwan-2 and Bara-2.

Tanahun-1 lay vacant after Ram Chandra Paudel was elected as the President on March 9, Bara-2 lay vacant after Ram Sahaya Prasad Yadav resigned from their post after being elected the Vice-President of the country. Similarly, Bara-2 lay vacant after the Supreme Court dismissed Rabi Lamichhane’s post over his citizenship dispute.

This silence period will start from today midnight (April 20) and remain effective until the polling centers close down on April 23, Deputy Spokesperson of the Election Commission (EC) Surya Prasad Aryal told Nepalkhabar.

Any kinds of discussions, interaction, meetings, assemblies, seminars, workshops, publicity for and against any candidates, soliciting votes  in persons or via SMS, Facebook or Viber or through other forms of social networking sites are strictly prohibited as per the Section 17 of the Election Code of Conduct, 2079.
