Devotees have offered arghya to the setting sun on the first day of Chhath festival -- a festival of social harmony and unity – on Sunday.

They marked the first day of their fasting by offering prayers to the setting sun and worshipping Chhati Mai from the 520 ghats built at the Gaurighat area in Kathmandu.

Gaurighat, where the largest number of devotees assemble for Chhath Puja, is beautifully decked with pandals, twinkling lights and banana plants.

Chhath is being celebrated with gusto at Kamalpokhari, Gaurighat in Kathmandu and in the lakes and ponds of Bhaktapur.

Along with Kathmandu, ponds and rivers in Lalitpur and Bhaktapur have been beautifully decorated for Chhath festival.

Until a few years ago, this festival was observed only by the inhabitants of Tarai. But now-a-days, it is also celebrated in hilly districts and valleys.

The festival will come to an end after the devotees offer arghya to the rising sun tomorrow (Monday).

Following are the images of the Chhath festival as seen through a Dutch photojournalist's camera lens.
