It has been revealed that around 100 kg illegal gold was entering Nepal through the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), for the last few days, on a daily basis.
The information that illegal gold was coming in through the air route from Hong Kong reached the Revenue Investigation Department.
On Wednesday, officials of the Department were alerted after being tipped off about the illegal import of gold around 100 kg.
The Department mobilized a team in the airport area since early morning today following the information that gold was being smuggled along with parts of scooters and motorcycles.
According to the Department, around 100 kg of gold was passed through customs on Wednesday itself.
"Recently, the department carried out a raid after receiving information that 100 kg of illegal gold was passing through the airport customs every day," an official said, "They were seized while being taken out after going through the customs check."
Two individuals have been arrested on suspicion of being involved in the illegal import of an estimated one quintal of gold. Among those arrested are customs agent Rajendra Kumar Rai and a taxi driver.
The seized gold has been sent to Nepal Rastra Bank to find out exactly how much and what quality it is.
Director General of Revenue Investigation Department Nawa Raj Dhungana has informed Nepalkhabar that the team of the Department recovered the illegal gold from the passengers who came to Nepal on a flight of Cathay Pacific Airways from Hong Kong.
