Sarahana Shrestha of Nepali origin has been elected as a member of the New York State Assembly. 

Shrestha has been elected from the Democratic Party, becoming the second Nepali-American to win the post of a member of the state-level legislative assembly in the US. 

She defeated Republican candidate Patrick Sheehan by obtaining 35,493 votes in the legislative elections held on November 8.

Her district is the 103rd, and she defeated 13-term incumbent Kevin Cahill in the democratic primary elections of the State Assembly.

Similarly, Dr. Harry Bhandari has also been elected to the Maryland State Assembly.
