Nepali-American fashion designer Prabal Gurung, who is known for his designs and personal brand, has bagged a prestigious award in the United States for his movement against anti-Asian hate crimes.
Gurung, the world-famous fashion designer, and his friends Phillip Lim, Laura Kim, Ezra J. Williams, and Tina Leung received the award amid a program on Tuesday. They are members of a group called The House of Slay.
The group was established in 2021 by Gurung and his friends in response to rising anti-Asian hate crimes. Since its inception, it has since mobilized Asian-American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) voters, created a comic book, and partnered with the Brooklyn Nets on its inaugural AAPI Heritage Night.

Gurung attended with singer-songwriter Varsha Thapa, who wore Look 26 from Gurung’s fall 2022 collection, a stunning red gown with a halter neckline and spacious cutouts, U.S. media reports said.
For his part, Gurung wore a three-piece YSL suit that he “found on a whim,” along with bling from Tasaki Atelier, the jewelry house of which he is creative director. He describes himself and Thapa as “two kids from Nepal living our dreams.”
On Wednesday, US Ambassador to Nepal Dean R. Thomspon congratulated Gurung for bagging the prestigious award.
"Congrats to @prabalgurung and @thehouseofslay for winning the prestigious award from The Council of Fashion Designers of America (@CFDA) for ”Positive Social Influence” for their work on stopping Asian hate," the ambassador tweeted.
