Businessman Ghimire: A link between Nepal and China no more

Businessman Pramod Ghimire, who established a link between Nepal and China through restaurant business passed away on Tuesday (December 5).

Ghimire, a Nepali businessman based in Guangzhou, was admitted to a hospital after he complained of respiratory complications. Ghimire died of cardiac arrest.

Ghimire went to Hong Kong and started a job at a restaurant in 1990s, according to Dilip Singh Gurung, his contemporary. Having worked for some years as an employee at the restaurant, Ghimire established a shop of beverages. In the course of expanding his business, he shifted to China from Macau. While in Macau, he had run Namaste Restaurant in 2007. It was the second restaurant established by a Nepali national after Kathmandu Restaurant.

Ghimire had also run a grocery shop in Macau. It served grocery items and was the first Nepali-run shop of its kind, according to a Nepali citizen who serves at Jockey Club in Macau.

Ghimire has a restaurant, Little PaPa Nepali-Indian Restaurant in Guangzhou. It has branches in various cities in China -- two branches in Guangzhou and one each in Shenzhen, Fuzhou and Hinan. 

Ghimire passed away on Tuesday at the age of 60. According to Nirmal Sharma Chaulagain, the president of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), China chapter, Sharma passed away at 3 pm (China time).

Ghimire was rushed in an ambulance to Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine for treatment after he suffered respiratory complications. He was pronounced dead at 3 pm (China time) by the hospital. He died of cardiac arrest, according to the hospital.

Ghimire had no other health issues, except for high blood pressure and diabetes, shared Chaulagain. He was promoting Nepali goods including white green tea, Nepali spring water, handicrafts in China, according to Chaulagain.

He was always rendering efforts to create environment conducive for Chinese nationals to invest in Nepal, Chaulagain added. The funeral rites for Ghimire will possibly be held on Monday.

“Family members are coming from Nepal, Australia, and UK. If they arrive by Sunday, the funeral rites will be performed on Monday,” said Chaulagain.

Funeral rites for Ghimire will be performed at Guangzhou Funeral House. Born in Arghakhanchi in 1963, Ghimire was a member of the NRNA, National Coordination Council, China chapter.
