There has been a hullabaloo at Karnali Province Hospital in Birendranagar Surkhet following the death of a 22-year-old patient.

According to Dinesh Budha, Nepalkhabar’s correspondence based in Surkhet, the hullabaloo occurred after 22-year-old Bhima Gurung (Rijuka) passed away in the course of treatment at the province hospital on Thursday.

Rijuka, originally from Aathbiskot Municipality-5, Dailekh, was hospitalized at the province hospital after she complained of abdominal pains on Thursday morning.

According to a doctor at the province hospital, some remains of umbilical cord were detected in the uterus of Rijuka when she delivered a baby four months ago.

Rijuka passed away during a procedure to remove retained placental tissue following childbirth four months ago. Doctors at the provincial hospital had detected remnants of the umbilical cord in her uterus and recommended the procedure.

She was admitted to the province hospital as per the doctor’s advice. She was pronounced dead in the course of removing the remnants of the umbilical cord in her uterus, according to Harka Bahadur Balami, the elder brother-in-law of the deceased.

“We were waiting outside in the visitor’s room. We were dumfounded when the doctor told us to receive the body. It was hard to believe that the daughter-in-law, who walked to Sukhet from the village only a few days ago, would die so early,” grumbled Balami.

According to Balami, the Rijuka was pronounced dead at 3 pm. The doctor had asked for blood a few hours before she passed away.

Irate kin are staging protests saying that she died due to the negligence of the doctors.

Binod Basnet, the information officer of the Province Hospital, said the investigation into the case is underway.

“According to the medical report, the patient’s condition was critical. The operation had to be carried out while removing the fetus of a few weeks. We are looking into the technical aspect,” said Basnet.

Even though Karnali Hospital is making strides in providing medical services, it has often courted complaints over its services.
