Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Balendra Shah, has informed that over 19,000 students have got scholarships in private schools in the metropolis in the 2081 academic session.

“Through the implementation of an act, over 19,000 students have got scholarships,” Mayor Balendra wrote on his Facebook on Thursday morning, “As many as 465 out of 504 private schools had provided scholarships to more than 13,000 students in the 2080 academic session."

Mayor Balendra claims that this is the greatest number of students ever awarded scholarships by private schools in the metropolis’ history.

Balendra further shared that the number of schools furnishing scholarship details for the ongoing 2081 academic session reached 473 as of Wednesday.

“Out of 149,956 students who applied for scholarships, 18,422 students have been awarded scholarships in private schools,” Balendra wrote, “With the implementation of the existing law, we succeeded to provide scholarships worth around Rs 2 billion to the target students. We will continue monitoring the details received. We will not hesitate to pursue legal recourse for non-compliance."

Issuing a notice today, the metropolis has given a three-day deadline to those schools who have not yet submitted the details.

“Schools failing to provide scholarship details within three days will be considered closed, and their operation permits will be revoked according to the Kathmandu Metropolitan Education Act, 2075,” reads the notice issued by the metropolis.

He further writes, “With the implementation of the existing law, 13,000 students got scholarships last year and around 19,000 students have got scholarships this academic session. The importance of enactment of law is justified only when it is implemented."

Hence, we are aware of the enactment of laws and their implementation, writes Balendra.
