Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Balendra Shah (Balen), has said the stark imbalance in job opportunities, healthcare access, and quality education is the root cause of migration of people from a village or a VDC to the capital city.

Expressing his views in the meeting of the Metropolis of the Board of Directors of the World Association of the Major Metropolises held in Brazil, Mayor Shah said, “Better job opportunities, health facilities and better education system are the root causes of the migration of people from a village or a VDC to the capital city.”

Shah said that the KMC has adopted an approach to collaborate with other cities and VDCs for the upliftment of their education system, healthcare access and to create job opportunities.

Shah further said that the KMC will hold a skills festival and train the people with plumbing skills, electrician and housing construction skills to enable them to get job opportunities in their own villages.

“We do not encourage migration of people to a single city from all over the country. We hold skills festival and train those who come for job opportunities with plumbing skills, electrician and housing constructions, khukuri making skills so that they can get job opportunities and create small businesses in their own cities and villages,” said Shah.

Shah further said that the migration of people from Nepal to other countries and the people from abroad to Nepal should be balanced. The KMC will also identify the homeless people and find shelters and foods for them in coordination with NGOs and INGos, said Shah.

KMC Mayor Shah had on June 17 left for Brazil to participate in meeting of the Metropolis Board of Directors of the World Association of the Major Metropolises meeting. The meeting was held on June 19 and 20.
