Incident site.

A person has died on the spot when the scooter he was driving was hit by a truck at Gaththaghar in Bhaktapur.

The scooter, Ba 49 Pa 8944, was hit by the truck, Na 6 Kha 2173, coming from behind, when the scooter was intercepted by a traffic police official for "breaching the speed limit."

The scooter was dragged along the road for about 100 meters even though the truck driver slammed on the brakes, an eyewitness said.

A large number of people are now staging demonstrations on the road against the traffic police saying that accident occurred after the speed limit was monitored with a radar gun in the busy road by "hiding behind the bush."

The deceased has not yet been identified.

Bhaktapur District Police Spokesperson DSP Rajan Karki said that the speeding truck hit the scooter while the latter was undergoing traffic police checking. According to an eyewitness, the truck was heading to Sallaghari from Kaushaltar.

Due to the large number of protestors shouting slogans, the crane that was taken to remove the dead body dragged by the truck has also been withdrawn. The road is bloody.

Irate people have set a fire to the truck and vandalized some other vehicles, too. The fire has now been contained, said police. A large number of security personnel have been deployed to control the situation.
