Scores of LGBTQ activists have participated in the annual pride parade organized at Thamel in Kathmandu on Tuesday.

Organized by the Blue Diamond Society, an LGBT rights organization in Nepal, the sexual minorities took part in the annual pride parade that coincides with the Gai Jatra festival.

Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizens Nawal Kishor Sah Sudi, diplomats and officials also participated in the event alongside the LGBTQ activists.

Even though the Gai Jatra festival is observed to remember the family members who have passed away during the year, it also brings in LGBTQ activists to join the parade.

After years of struggles by the sexual minorities, the government legalized the same-sex marriage for the first in the Himalayan nation following the Supreme Court order in November 2023.

Similarly, those who do not want to identify as male or female can choose ‘third gender’ on their passports and other government documents since the court order in 2007. The Constitution of Nepal, 2015 has explicitly stipulated that there can be no discrimination against any citizen on the ground of sexual orientation.
