Two children of a family have died and two others sustained injuries in an IED explosion in the eastern hilly district Panchthar, the District Police Office (DPO), Panchthar said.
DSP Hemanta Bhandari informed that two children were killed when an IED exploded in Phalelung Rural Municipality-5, Dandagaun on Thursday afternoon.
"Four children were injured when a suspicious object went off in the yard near the house of local Aitaraj Kerung on Thursday afternoon. Two of them died in the course of treatment," DSP Bhandari told Nepalkhabar on Friday morning.
The two children who sustained injuries are from a neighboring house, according to Bhandari.
The deceased are 2-year-old daughter Prinsa and 11-year-old son Dipshan of Dilip Sanwa, a local. Prinsa and Dipsan who sustained critical injuries passed away while being taken to B&C Hospital in Jhapa for treatment, informed DSP Bhandari.
Similarly, 11-year-old Pawan Rai and 7-year-old Dipshan Rai, sons of local Gyan Bahadur Rai, were injured in the blast. Among the injured, Pawan is being treated at District Hospital Phidim while Dipshan is undergoing treatment at a local health post. "Their condition is out of danger," DSP Bhandari said.
The police assumed that they died when the 'homemade grenade' exploded. But the Nepali Army team is yet to confirm it, police said.
"The Nepali army team is heading to the incident site from the headquarters. Some more explosives have been found in that place,” said DSP Bhandari.
Bhandari informed that it is yet to be revealed who and why the explosives were placed there. He said that the investigation into the incident is underway.
