A tremor has been felt in Kathmandu Valley on Tuesday morning.
The tremor was recorded at 6:11 am. According to senior seismologist Dr. Lok Bijaya Adhikari, an earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale struck with its epicenter at Shikharpur in Sindhupalchowk. The tremors were felt in surrounding districtis including Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Kavre, and Dolakha apart from Sindhupalchowk.
However, no casualties or damages caused by the quake have been reported until this posting of the news.
This is an aftershock of Gorkha earthquake that devastated Nepal on April 25, 2015, according to Dr. Adhikari. Thousands of aftershocks have occurred following this mega earthquake.
Nepal lies in a fault zone as the Indian plate is constantly pushing against the Eurasian (Tibetan) plate, resulting in seismic activities in the Himalayan country, said Geographer Ganesh Kumar Jimee.
Jimee further said Nepal lies between the two tectonic plates -- Indian plate and the Eurasian Plate -- and their constant push against each other is creating energy. When the energy gets accumulated and strained, it releases in the form of seismic waves.
