A meeting of the Constitutional Council (CC) has recommended senior Justice Prakashman Singh Raut as the next Chief Justice of Nepal.

A CC meeting held at the Prime Minister's Official Residence in Baluwatar held this evening recommended Raut at the next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on the basis of seniority, said Deputy Speaker and member of the CC, Indira Rana.

"Seniors have been recommended since the beginning. The recommendation, this year too, has been made on the basis of seniority," Deputy Speaker Rana informed Nepalkhabar.

Chief Justice Bishowambhar Prasad Shrestha, Speaker of the House of Representatives Devraj Ghimire, Opposition Leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda', Chairman of the National Assembly Narayan Dahal and Deputy Speaker Indira Rana were present in the meeting as members of the CC.

A meeting of the Judicial Council on September 5 had sent a list of eight justices qualified for the Chief Justice.

The CC meeting picked Raut among eight Justices for the post of Chief Justice based on seniority.

The President will appoint Raut as the next Chief Justice after the Parliamentary Hearing Committee endorses Raut's candidacy.

Incumbent Chief Justice Bishowambhar Prasad Shrestha is retiring on October 6 on the ground of age-limit.
