Tamu Lhosar is being observed by Gurung community with fanfare across the country today.
People from young to elders from Gurung community, clad in their traditional attire, have thronged Tundikhel in Kathmandu to celebrate the festival. The government has announced a public holiday on the occasion today.
The festival is celebrated on the 15th of the Nepali month Poush (December-January) and the night today is the longest of the year and then, the duration of the night is believed to gradually shorten.

Gurung people mark this festival as the beginning of the New Year by worshipping gods, gathering and rejoicing with exchanges of greetings among their relatives, friends and family members on this occasion.
The festival is observed in the mountainous belts of Humla, Dolpa, Mugu, Manang and Jumla districts the following day.
