Tamang people are observing Sonam Lhosar with much fanfare by organizing various programs across country today.
In the Tamang language 'Lho' signifies a year and their tradition recognizes a 12-year cycle. Each year within the cycle is associated with the name of an animal or bird: Rat, Cow, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. After the 12 years complete, the cycle begins anew, repeating the same sequence of animal and bird names.
According to Smithu Ghising, a TV journalist, the Tamang people are bidding adieu to the Dragon Year and welcoming the Snake Year. "We are observing Sonam Lhosar with much fanfare. This is the time to bid farewell to the Year of Dragon and now we are all set to welcome the Year of Snake," Ghising told Nepalkhabar.

People, especially from Hyolmo and Tamang communities dwelling in the Himalayan regions do celebrate this festival after a successful harvesting of the crops.
Meanwhile, a program has been organized at Tundikhel in Kathmandu to mark Sonam Lhosar festival.
Amidst a vibrant tableau, revelers of all ages from the Tamang community, clad in traditional attire, are participating in the festival, creating a dazzling show of traditions and culture.
