Senior advocate Rabi Narayan Khanal has won the election for the councilor of the Nepal Bar Council from Bagmati Province.
Khanal defeated his rival, senior advocate Parshu Ram Koirala, by a margin of 578 votes. Khanal received 2,355 votes, while Koirala received 1,777 votes, according to the election committee.
Khanal was the common candidate of the Progressive, Professional, Patriotic, Inclusive group. Khanal belongs to the Progressive Professional Lawyers' Association close to the UML. He was also supported by the Revolutionary Lawyers' Association close to CPN (Maoist Center).
Koirala had filed his candidacy on behalf of the Nepal Democratic Lawyers' Association close to Nepali Congress.
Chaired by the Attorney General, the council is an organization that monitors and regulates the professional code of conduct of lawyers.
As per the provision to select one councilor from each of the seven provinces, the voting for the Bagmati Province councilor took place on the Supreme Court premises.
There were 8,200 voters in Bagmati Province alone.
Earlier, senior advocate Dr. Chandra Kanta Gyawali had been elected as a councilor from Bagmati Province. The election was held after Gyawali's five-year term expired.
Who won in other provinces?
Raju Dhakal from Koshi Province, Sanjiv Kumar Malik from Madhesh, Dayaram Gautam from Gandaki, Ishwari Prasad Gyawali from Lumbini, Matrika Prasad Khanal from Karnali and Tek Bahadur Kathayat from Sudurpashchim have been elected as councilors of Nepal Bar Council.
Candidates of the DLA (NC)-led alliance have won councilors in Koshi, Madhesh, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpashchim provinces. In this election, an alliance was formed between NC and the association of legal practitioners close to CPN (Unified Socialist).
Candidates of the UML-Maoist Center alliance have won only in Bagmati and Karnali.
