A controversy has arisen after Kul Acharya, president of the association, refused online voting in the general assembly of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) in Kathmandu. After the dispute escalated, it was demanded that the current working committee be dissolved and an ad-hoc committee formed.
Speaking in favor of the amendment of the statute in the general assembly that lasted until Tuesday night, the vice president of the association, D.B. Chhetri, argued that there is no justification for the current working committee to create controversy without understanding the sentiments of the members. After Acharya rejected the unanimous decision of the Statute Amendment Committee saying that founder president Upendra Mahato should not vote online, the general assembly became a prisoner of indecision.
Mahesh Shrestha, vice president of the association, sought a reason not to go for online voting. He has demanded online voting arguing that the present age is digital technology.
Acharya raised concerns about online voting and representative selection in the general meeting. Amidst the disputes, the Statute Amendment Committee submitted the amendment proposal to the presidents of the association, Rabina Thapa and Dr. Badri KC, Deputy General Secretary Gauriraj Joshi and Dr Keshav Paudel.
Speaking at the general meeting, Roshan Thapa, the youth vice-president of the association, said that the organization was in crisis due to the attitude of the former presidents and suggested the former president to not meddle in the amendment issue.
Similarly, an official present at the general meeting questioned the intention and ability of the Acharya.
After failing to reach an agreement on the amendment of the statute, the executive president Rabina Thapa adjourned the meeting saying that an agreement will be sought between the presidents until Wednesday, and if there is no agreement, the election will be held in line with the existing statute.
