Rights organizations have urged authorities to ensure a transparent and independent selection process for appointing officials to Nepal’s long-pending transitional justice commissions.
Issuing a joint statement on Sunday, the Accountability Watch Committee, Amnesty International-Nepal, Advocacy Forum-Nepal, INSEC, JuRI-Nepal, and LACC emphasized that past political interference in appointments has led to institutional failures and public distrust.
They called for rigorous background checks, public hearings, and unbiased evaluations of candidates.
The groups also piled pressure on Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, and Maoist Center Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ to uphold their commitments to a fair transitional justice process, warning against recommending unqualified or partisan candidates, which could further delay justice for victims.
Meanwhile, civil society and media were urged to monitor the selection closely to ensure credibility. The statement stressed that only competent, independent appointees can restore trust in the transitional justice mechanism.
