The patron of Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP) Resham Chaudhary has been arrested.

A team of police arrested Chaudhary from the premises of Nepal Academy in Kathmandu a while ago.

He was taken under control from the premises of Nepal Academy at a time when he was going to attend a party unification program between NUP and Janamat Party.

With Resham's arrest, the program scheduled to announce the party unification has been uncertain.

According to police, he was arrested to serve the remaining prison term related to the Kailali incident.

SP Apilraj Bohara, spokesperson for the Kathmandu District Police Range, stated that Chaudhary was arrested to serve the remaining prison sentence related to the Tikapur incident, in compliance with the court’s order.

Chaudhary has been arrested based on the Supreme Court's decision dated May 16, 2023. He has been sent to Dillibazar Prison.

Chaudhary was convicted as the mastermind of the Tikapur massacre that took place on August 24, 2015, in which eight security personnel and an infant were killed in cold blood.

Courts from the district level to the Supreme Court had sentenced him to life imprisonment. However, on the recommendation of the government, President Ramchandra Paudel granted him clemency on May 29, 2023, on the occasion of Republic Day.

Although the Supreme Court had already issued a decision upholding the lower court’s life sentence verdict, the full text of the judgment had not yet been released.
