Humla Glacial Lakes 'Outburst': 18 houses damaged, 5 bridges washed away in flash floods

32 locals relocated to a safe area; power house building damaged

A flash flood caused by the 'outburst' of two glacial lakes has caused damages to Tilgaun in Namkha Rural Municipality-6 in Humla district.

Talking to Nepalkhabar, Paljor Tamang, the chairman of ward-6 said two glacial lakes situated at Thakra in the upper region of mountainous district Humla, burst causing flash-floods and damages to Tilgaun on May 15. A five-member team from Tilagaun had reached the site this afternoon.

"A five-member team under my leadership reached the site this afternoon. After a walk of eight hours, we reached Thakra where we found two glacial lakes to have burst," said Tamang," This site is located at an altitude of 5,300 meters above sea level."

The names and the cause behind the outburst of the lakes, however, remain unknown. It was discovered for the first time, according to Tamang.

Earlier, a team of security personnel who left for the site had abandoned their search after reaching the height of 4,700 meters, according Chief District Office of Hisla, Narayan Prasad Pandey.

The flash floods which occurred at around 11 pm last Thursday swept away five bridges and a road across the Tilchung rivulet, a power house building along with a canal. Tilgaun is situated at an altitude of 3948.34 meters, according to APF DSP Spokesperson Shailendra Thapa.

According to Thapa, 32 locals including 21 men, nine women and two children have been relocated to a safer area after their houses sustained damages due to the flash-floods. Out of 50 houses, 18 have been at risk of the flash-floods, said Thapa.
