The Ninth Central Committee (CC) meeting of the CPN (UML) at the central party office in Chyasal, Laliltpur concluded that former President Bidya Devi Bhandari cannot return to active politics, citing constitutional and institutional dignity. The two-day meeting concluded that individuals who have held the position of President— custodian of the nation—should not re-enter partisan politics.
"After reaching such a prestigious position, returning to active politics undermines institutional decorum and could even be seen as disrespectful to the office," said Rajendra Gautam, head of UML’s publicity department. The meeting concluded that Bhandari’s potential return would set a wrong precedent, conflicting with Nepal’s constitutional values.
The decision comes amid intense debate within the party after Bhandari sought to renew her membership and rejoin active politics. The CC also decided to abolish age and term limits for leadership, effectively clearing the path for current Chairman KP Sharma Oli to retain his position in the upcoming national convention.
Gautam clarified that while Oli is the likely choice, other qualified leaders may contest. "The party’s focus is now on Mission 2084, and we must advance under Oli’s leadership," he added.
Oli, in his closing remarks, criticized Bhandari’s membership renewal as "procedurally flawed," asserting that only his approval could validate such decisions. He also declared that Bhandari should now be honored as "former President" rather than a party comrade.
The UML’s stance underscores a broader principle: heads of state must remain above partisan politics to preserve national unity and constitutional integrity. "This isn’t just UML’s concern—it’s a matter for all parties to consider seriously," Gautam stressed.
