The Election Commission of Nepal (ECN) has officially declared that Ranjita Shrestha herself is the chairperson of Nagarik Unmukti Party (NUP).
Acting Chief Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari told Nepalkhabar that the ECN decided to recognize Ranjita Shrestha as the chairperson of NUP. "The decision was taken in line with the Political Parties Act, 2017 and the statute of the concerned party," said Bhandari, "The details presented by the dissenting leaders of the party did not align with the party act and the statute."
A meeting of the Commission held on Tuesday took a decision to this effect.
A meeting of the founding members of NUP convened on July 31 had decided to terminate Shrestha and appoint Lalbir Chaudhary as the party chairperson.
Lalbir is the father of founder chairperson Resham Chaudhary and the father-in-law of Ranjita.
With the Commission's decision, Resham's effort to appoint his father as the NUP chairperson by removing his wife has fallen flat.
