The Teej festival, also known as Haritalika, is being celebrated with great joy across the country today. Since early Tuesday morning, Shiva temples across the country, including Pashupatinath in Kathmandu, have witnessed long queues of women observing the fast.
The Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT) stated that arrangements have been made for smooth worship at Pashupatinath. All four temple gates were opened since 3:00 am, according to Member-Secretary Subhashchandra Joshi. Some devotees had already lined up before 3:00 am. Approximately three thousand security personnel have been deployed for crowd management.
Celebrated on the third day of the bright fortnight of Bhadra, Hindu women worship Lord Shiva on Teej, which is considered a fundamental festival for Nepali women. There is a belief that observing this fast brings marital bliss to married women and a suitable husband to unmarried women.
A mythological belief has it that this fast began in the Satyayuga when Goddess Parwati performed penance at Gaurighat and was blessed to get Lord Shiva as her husband.
The government has granted a holiday to women today.
