Following the government's ban on 26 social media platforms, some companies have begun the registration process.
According to Gajendra Kumar Thakur, spokesperson for the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, two companies have contacted, and one, Hamro Patro, has already started its registration process.
Thakur stated that the ban, which applies to platforms that did not register by the deadline, came into effect on Thursday. He also noted that X (formerly Twitter) has made an official inquiry about the necessary documents for registration, to which the ministry has responded.
The decision to deactivate these platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, and X, was made at a meeting chaired by Communications Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung. The Nepal Telecommunications Authority was instructed to implement the ban, and internet service providers are now in the process of gradually blocking these sites.
What does Sudina Gautam, director of Hamro Patro, say?
After the government banned 26 social media platforms, including Hamro Patro, the company's director, Sudina Gautam, submitted the required documents for registration. She stated that the ban was a misunderstanding, as she does not consider Hamro Patro a social media platform in the traditional sense.
Gautam explained that she defines a social media platform as a place where two individuals can communicate with each other, a feature her company did not previously have.
She noted that they were already in the process of developing a chat function and were planning to register as a social media platform anyway.
