A Chinese railway expert has said that they will closely work with the Nepali side to overcome difficulties to build Kerung-Kathmandu railway.

The railway line, which is proposed to be built under the Belt and Road Initiative, will connect Tibetan Autonomous Region of China with Kathmandu.

"The cross-border railway project crosses the Himalayas where terrain and geological conditions are extremely complex. The project has world-class engineering difficulties, Feng Dequan, the Chinese railway expert, has been quoted by China's Xinhua News Agency as saying.

The Feng-led six-member Chinese team came to Nepal on Tuesday to carry out feasibility study of the cross-border railway.

The feasibility study will be carried out by the China Railway First Survey and Design Institute Group.

He said that their team will make full use of China's advanced technology and rich experience in building railways in difficult and complex mountainous and plateau areas, closely cooperate with top scientific research institutions in China and Nepal.

Feng said that their team will work together with Nepalese engineers to overcome difficulties and carry out the technical research work well for the project.

"As the first batch of experts, our arrival in Kathmandu marks new progress in the feasibility study project," Xinhua further quoted Feng as saying.

China on Monday said that it would pursue projects under the BRI with Nepal while extending best wishes to Prachanda on his appointment as the prime minister.

It is estimated that it might take at least 42 months to complete the feasibility study of the railway. The estimated cost for the feasibility study of the 72-km cross-border railway will be around Nepali rupees 3.4 billion.

China, which has already linked Kerung with the Lhasa-Shigatse railway line on the Chinese side, has shown keen interests to expand railway to Kathmandu and Lumbini, the birthplace of the Lord Buddha.
