Dan Bahadur Karki has been appointed as the Inspector General of Nepal Police (IGP).
A meeting of the Council of Ministers held on Monday evening decided to appoint Karki as the 33rd Inspector General of Police. Karki is currently working at the Kathmandu Valley Police Office, Ranipokhari.
IGP Chandra Kuber Khapung of Nepal Police is retiring on Wednesday after completing his 30 years of service. With two days to go for Khapung to retire, the government appointed Karki as the new IGP on the basis of seniority on Monday itself.
As things stand, Karki will lead the police organization until March 31, 2028. He joined the police service as an Inspector on March 31, 1998.
He was appointed as Deputy Superintendent of Police on December 11, 2009, Superintendent of Police on August 3, 2017, and Senior Superintendent of Police July 19, 2022. When he was an SSP, he served as the Chief of the Kathmandu Police Range Office.
Karki was promoted to the post Deputy Inspector General on May 26, 2024 and Additional Inspector General of Police on April 24, 2025. Rajan Adhikari and Manoj Kumar KC were also promoted along with Karki.
Karki, who was initially stationed at the Police Human Resources Department after being promoted to AIG, was transferred to the post of Chief of Kathmandu Valley Police Office on September 9, following the large-scale human casualties that occurred during the Gen Z uprising.
After taking charge of the Valley, Karki instructed police personnel not to use force that would result in human casualties against the protestors. Instead, he directed them to focus on protecting weapons, vehicles, important office materials, and their own safety.
