A section of private dairy industries, who had hiked selling price of milk citing increased production costs, has withdrawn the price hike.

The attention of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' was drawn towards the issue after some new portals published the news about milk price hike.

Subsequently, Prime Minister Prachanda instructed the secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development to ensure withdrawal of price hike.

"Following news reports that some dairy industries had unilaterally hiked the price of milk, the Prime Minister inqured about the matter with the Secretary of the Ministry of Livestock Development," said Ramesh Malla, the personal secretary of the Prime Minister.

Following PM's intervention, the price hike was reverted.

Rajendra Prasad Yadav, executive director of the National Dairy Development Board, said the decision to increase the price of milk was reverted after stakeholders, the board and secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development held discussions.

The Essential Commodities Control (Authorization) Act, 2017, has categorized milk as an essential commodity.

However, some private dairy industries unilaterally increased the price of milk by up to Rs 14 per liter from Saturday, citing high cost of buying milk from dairy farmers.
