Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has resigned from his post.
Thapa resigned from his post on the grounds of moral responsibility for the defeat in the House of Representatives elections held on March 5.
Sources have said that President Thapa submitted his resignation to Vice President Bishwa Prakash Sharma on Wednesday. However, Thapa's resignation letter has not been made public.
NC has called a central working committee (CWC) meeting on March 20. Thapa resigned prior to the meeting.
Thapa became the party president through the special general convention of the party held at Bhrikutimandap in Kathmandu from January 11 to 14.
The special general convention had elected a new central working committee of NC under the leadership of Thapa.
However, the then President Sher Bahadur Deuba and Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka had filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court regarding its legality.
The writ petition is still pending in the Supreme Court.
Immediately after the special general convention, the Congress entered the elections. In the elections, Thapa was defeated by Amresh Kumar Singh of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) in Sarlahi-4.
Thapa was not the only one who was defeated in the elections; many top leaders failed to win the elections. While RSP won almost two-thirds of the seats in the elections, the old democratic party, NC, could only win 18 seats directly and 20 seats through proportional representation.
After becoming a weak opposition in the elections, leaders of the Deuba faction have been criticizing Thapa.
