The Indian government said it is holding discussions with Nepal following the recent enforcement of customs duties on goods exceeding Rs 100 brought across the border for personal use. The move, which targets items purchased in India by Nepali citizens, has sparked concerns and protests among residents in the area bordering Bihar.
During a recent press briefing, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that these regulations do not apply to Indian citizens traveling into Nepal with personal or household effects. He noted that while the rule itself is not new, its sudden strict implementation by Nepali authorities is intended to curb informal trade and smuggling rather than penalize ordinary travelers.
The enforcement has led to a surge in viral videos showing clashes at border checkpoints, prompting worries about a "bad message" being circulated to local communities. However, Jaiswal emphasized that senior Nepali officials have provided assurances that laborers returning from India with their personal belongings will not face restrictions or additional taxes.
As protests continue in border towns, both nations are working to balance trade security with the daily needs of those living along the border. The Indian government remains optimistic that diplomatic dialogue will resolve the current implementation hurdles and ease the burden on local residents.
