Meta, the parent company of the world-famous social network Facebook, is going to invest in a data center in Nepal. Meta is going to invest five billion rupees in Nepal in collaboration with WorldLink Communications, an internet service provider in Nepal. The two companies have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to this effect, the sources have said.
American multinational company Meta Platforms Inc. is the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, Threads and Manus. Facebook is a widely used social media platform in Nepal.
Meta is one of the world's 'Top-6 Big Tech' giants that contributes well to the global economy. Worldlink already has its own data center in Matatirtha, Kathmandu. Meta is coming to Nepal to use and expand the same infrastructure.
Meta and Worldlink had already signed a 'Non-Disclosure Agreement' (NDA) a few months ago. The parties involved will not reveal sensitive or confidential information received from each other. Now they have gone a step further and signed an investment partnership agreement. Both companies have agreed to disclose the investment details in a few months, a source said.
Tier-Three data center
As per the latest agreement, Meta is building a Tier-Three level data center in Nepal. A Tier-Three data center is a highly reliable level of infrastructure that can be repaired without shutting down the system. This level of digital infrastructure is essential for modern digital services and AI companies.
Such data centers, which are used by banks, banking apps and fintech companies, are not only for digital records of healthcare services, patient data management that requires 24-hour service, and hospitals. Apart from this, it is also necessary for cloud and hosting services. E-commerce and high-traffic online companies also use Tier-Three data centers.
Meta has agreed to invest about five billion rupees for data center operators in Nepal. Worldlink will be the local representative in Nepal for this project.
