A series of devastating thunderstorms and lightning strikes swept through Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, claiming at least 89 lives and causing widespread destruction.
According to The Times of India, the extreme weather—characterized by intense dust storms, heavy rainfall, and gale-force winds—battered the region between 8:00 am and 11:30 pm.
The storms triggered fatal wall collapses and uprooted trees across several districts. The highest death tolls were recorded with 21 fatalities in Prayagraj followed by 14 fatalities in Sant Ravidas Nagar, 11 in Fatehpur and 10 fatalities in Mirzapur.
Similarly, additional casualties were reported in Unnao, Badaun, Bareilly, and Pratapgarh. Authorities confirmed that 53 people were injured and 114 livestock perished during the event.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributed the severe weather to atmospheric shifts linked to western disturbances.
