President of Nepali Congress (NC), Gagan Kumar Thapa, has said that civilian supremacy is the key priority of his party and that it continues to advocate for the causes of people.

In his address to the first General Convention of the Nepal Tharu Association, a sister wing of the party, in Sanepa on Saturday, he pledged that the party would strive to ensure comfortable access of the Tharu community to the state bodies.  He also acknowledged   the contribution of the Tharu people to the establishment of national integrity.

As he said, BP Koirala, the founding leader of the Nepali Congress, had ensured the representation of the Tharu community within the party's responsibilities, demonstrating his deep faith and trust in them.

Commenting on the budget presented for the upcoming fiscal year, the NC President and former Minister said though the budget has been successful in incorporating various reformative measures, it is silent on those classes who are living on meagre incomes.

NC General Secretaries Pradip Paudel and Guru Raj Ghimire called for protecting and improving the rights of Tharu people, the indigenous community of Nepal, who have largely contributed to the country's border security and economic development.

NC Parliamentary Party leader Bishma Raj Angdembey stressed that the NC should focus on establishing the agenda of identities at every level of the state.

Former Minister Tejulal Chaudhary was of the view that the Tharu community is still excluded from their proportional representation in the government services, in executive  and the political leadership, despite that 11 years having passed since the promulgation of the Constitution, which enshrines the principles of proportional inclusion and participatory governance.
