France advanced into the knockout phase of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a game to spare after a dominant 3–0 victory over Iraq at the Lincoln Financial Field. Striker Kylian Mbappé spearheaded the French attack, netting a brilliant brace to dismantle the Iraqi defense in a match temporarily halted by inclement weather.
The clash faced an unexpected delay when torrential rain forced officials to suspend play for nearly an hour. However, the lengthy interruption did little to dampen the French momentum. France quickly asserted control, with Mbappé breaking the deadlock in the 14th minute to give his side a 1–0 lead toward the interval.
Mbappé struck again in the 54th minute of the second half, doubling France's advantage with a clinical finish. The night grew even sweeter for Les Bleus in the 66th minute when Ousmane Dembélé found the back of the net to seal the 3–0 win, marking his first-ever career goal in a World Cup tournament.
This victory cements France's flying start to their World Cup campaign, following their 3–1 victory over Senegal in the opening group match. With six points from two games, the French side comfortably secures early qualification to the Round of 32.
In contrast, Iraq face a steep uphill battle to keep their tournament hopes alive. Having suffered a heavy 4–1 defeat to Norway in their opening fixture, the Asian side will need a decisive turnaround in their final group match to stand any chance of progression.
