The grand finale of the FIFA World Cup 2026 between Argentina and Spain has headed into extra time after a grueling, scoreless 90 minutes. With both teams deadlocked at 0-0 at the end of regulation time, the ultimate champion will be decided in the upcoming 30 minutes of extra time, or potentially through a dramatic penalty shootout if the stalemate continues.

Playing at the New Jersey Stadium near New York, both heavyweights created significant goal-scoring opportunities throughout the regular time but failed to find the back of the net. Spain dominated the first half with fluid attacking plays but suffered from poor finishing in the final third. Defending champions Argentina fought back in the second half, yet neither side could break the deadlock.

The dynamic of the match shifted drastically in stoppage time when Argentina was reduced to 10 men. Midfielder Enzo Fernandez received a second yellow card and was sent off in the third minute of injury time following a reckless tackle on a Spanish player, leaving the reigning champions visually vulnerable for the remainder of the tournament's final stretch.

Spain looked to capitalize on their numerical advantage almost immediately. In the eighth minute of added time, a brilliant free-kick from teenage sensation Lamine Yamal forced a sensational, punching save from Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to keep his team alive.

This historic 2026 edition marks the first time the FIFA World Cup has been jointly hosted by three nations across 16 cities, featuring an expanded format of 48 countries playing a total of 104 matches. As the battle for the trophy rages on, European giants Spain are looking to capture the title for the first time in 16 years, while three-time champions Argentina (1978, 1986, 2022) are fighting to defend their crown despite the heavy numerical disadvantage.
