Reigning champions Argentina suffered a defeat in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, to Spain losing 1–0 in a high-stakes clash on Monday morning. With this victory, Spain claimed their second World Cup title—16 years after their historic first win in 2010—leaving the three-time champions stunned as the final whistle blew.

Despite hiding his anguish for much of the post-match proceedings, Argentina's captain Lionel Messi couldn't hold back his emotions. After receiving the runners-up trophy from U.S. President Donald Trump, Messi walked back to the chanting crowd echoing "Messi! Messi!!" Moved by the unwavering love of his fans, tears welled up in his eyes as teammate Rodrigo De Paul was also seen sobbing beside him.

Football analysts noted that Argentina failed to deliver their expected performance on the grand stage. Unable to match expectations during the crucial final, the defending champions had to settle for second place, while Spain secured a memorable championship victory.
