Police have arrested a group of racketeers for their involvement in issuing Nepali citizenship cards to more than 500 Tibetans.
Metropolitan Police Crime Investigation Division rounded up five individuals including Krishna Bahadur Katuwal from Babarmahal, Kathmandu.
Police have made them public after arrest today.
“Acting on a complaint that a group of racketeers is involved in issuing citizenships to Tibetans in cahoots with government officials, we have arrested five individuals including Krishna Bahadur Katuwal from Babarmahal on Monday," said police.
Meanwhile, police have seized citizenship cards, educational certificates, driving licenses, birth certificates, migration certificates, marriage registration certificates and divorce certificates and recommendation letters from the ward offices.
Katuwal has been running a canteen at the District Administration Office, Kathmandu. Nyutkesh Shrestha and Bijaya Lama are among those arrested. Police have started investigating the officials of DAO, Kathmandu after this incident cane to the fore.
It is learnt that Katuwal used to take up to Rs 150,000 for a citizenship card.
Among those arrested is a Tibetan refugee Lobsang Thinle who stays in the Tibentan refugee camp.
