In Romania, there is a growing trend of making Nepali migrant workers work harder and firing them from their jobs if they fail to meet expectations.

Recently, in a place called Tobra in Romania, a company run by a Chinese national has brutally tortured a Nepali worker and dismissed him from his job. The victim, originally from Taplejung, said that the owner brutally thrashed him with a wooden stick.

The victim fled for his life last Sunday after the owner threatened to kill him.

The victim said that he went to the hospital with the help of an ambulance and after an overnight treatment he went to the police to lodge a complaint.

However, to his disappointment, the police told him that they could not do anything for his justice.

"The police told me to go to the court and fight the case," the young victim told Nepalkhabar, requesting anonymity, "I don't have money to hire a lawyer. There is no one here to advocate for us."

He said that he is currently living in Bucharest with Nepali workers and there are many other victims like him.

"There are 11 Nepali migrant workers including myself staying here in one room," he said. We are stranded because there is no money to buy a ticket to return to Nepal."

According to him, Nepalis are suffering due to the tendency of the company to keep documents such as passports, and not to give them a release paper if they are unable to work.

When enquired about this, Ram Kaji Khadka, the Nepali Ambassador to Germany, which also looks after Romania, said that he was not aware of this incident and no one had informed him.
