Aruna Gurung has been nominated for the member of the District Council (DC) by the Hong Kong government, representing the Nepali community, for the first time in history since it was formed on July 1, 1997.
The Hong Kong government on Tuesday nominated Gurung as a member of Yau Tsim Mong District. Yau Ma Tei and Jordan areas in this district are densely populated by the Nepali community.
An individual of Nepali origin has been appointed to the post as per the policy adopted by the Hong Kong government to include ethnic minority in state organs. It is learnt that Hong Kong appointed her to the post based on (the evaluation of) her commendable contributions to the ethnic minority. She will take charge as the DC member for the next four years.
Gurung had taken retirement last year after having served for 32 years in her capacity as an Inflight Service Manager of Cathay Pacific Airways of Hong Kong.
Gurung, who was previously a member of the Hong Kong Women's Commission, a member of the Committee on the Promotion of Racial Harmony, served as an active member of the Fire Safety Committee of Yau Tsim Mong District, until recently.
Fluent in local Cantonese language, Gurung had been honored with the Hong Kong Government's 'Chief Executive Commendation for Community Service Award' in 2012.
The government today nominated 179 individuals from various walks of life, ranging from education to law, health to social work, engineering to finance, including Gurung, as council members in various districts. This government decision will be published in an official gazette on December 14.
