Five associations of government employees have warned Home Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha that they would go on strike if the police officials ‘involved in thrashing’ an immigration officer at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) were not brought to justice.
A meeting of the representatives of the five associations of government employees held in Kathmandu this morning took a decision to this effect and their representatives met with Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Shrestha this afternoon.
In the meeting with Home Minister Shrestha, they warned of strike if the police officials involved in in the face-off were penalized in accordance with the law within three days.
“We will go on nation-wide strike if the police officials involved in the face-off at the Tribhuvan International Airport are not brought to justice within three days,” reads a memorandum submitted by them to Home Minister Shrestha.
Immigration officials have accused the police officials of breaching their jurisdiction, of late. Last week, more than 80 individuals, who were going abroad on visit visas, were turned back from the TIA.
A video footage involving a scuffle between police officials and immigration officer that occurred at the TIA at around 12 pm on Friday has gone viral on social networking sites. The CCTV footage shows an immigration officer kicking the police official before being thrashed by a team of security personnel.
Nepal Civil Service Employees’ Association Chairperson Leknath Koirala, Nepal Civil Service Employees’ Union Chairperson Gopal Prasad Pokharel, Nepal National Employees’ Association Amba Datta Bhatta, Unified Government Employees’ Association Chairperson Gagan Singh Bista, and Nepal Madhesi Civil Service Employees’ Forum Bijaya Kumar Yadav were present in the delegation.
