The government is set to observe International Everest Day at the base camp of Sagarmatha, the highest peak of the world.

The Day is being observed to mark the 71st anniversary of the historic first ascent of Mt Everest.

Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary conquered Mt Everest on May 29, 1953, for the first time in history. The government has been celebrating the Day to commemorate the first summit of Mt Everest since 2008.

The Nepal Mountaineering Association will organize the programs in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation and the other organizations associated with tourism.

Preparations are underway to celebrate the 17th International Day on May 29 in the Sagarmatha region, said Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Hit Bahadur Tamang.

Talking to media persons at the Ministry on Sunday, Minister Tamang shared that the program will be held at the foot of Sagarmatha and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' will grace it as the chief guest.

Tourism Minister Tamang said, "This time, we are making necessary preparations to celebrate International Everest Day at the foot of Everest in the presence of Prime Minister Prachanda as the chief guest."

However, the ministry said that it is not yet certain in which area of Everest the day program will be held.

To make the day a grand success, the main program organizing committee has been formed under the coordination of Tourism Minister Tamang. The committee consists of tourism ministers and secretaries of all seven provinces.

According to the statistics of the Tourism Department, about 8,000 people have climbed Mt Everest so far. Among the 14 highest mountains in the world, eight of them are in Nepal, including Everest, the highest peak in the world.
