Leaders including Ashok Rai who reached the Office of the Election Commission to register a new party on Sunday.

Newly formed Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) by Ashok Kumar Rai has got recognition from the Election Commission of Nepal (ECN).

The ECN has decided to register JSP, a splinter of the Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal (JSP-N), the spokesperson of the Commission, Ram Dutta Pandey, told Nepalkhabar.

Seven members of parliament including Rai on Sunday filed an application at the ECN, seeking a registration of the newly formed party JSP.

According to Pandey, the JSP got recognition in accordance with the Political Parties Act, 2017.

The 33 (2) Section of the Political Parties Act, 2017 allows for a creation of a new party with at least 40 percent of the central committee members and parliamentary party members of a party.

Then Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba in 2078 BS introduced an ordinance which laid down a provision that at least 20 percent of members of the parliamentary party or the same percent of central committee members could break away and form a new party.

This ordinance was withdrawn following the split of Janata Samajbadi Party Nepal and CPN (UML). However, the process to revive the previous provision or replace it with a new one is yet to be completed following the revocation of the ordinance.
