A new sub-variant of Omicron variant of COVID-19 has been detected in Nepal.
New sub variants --‘KP 1’, ‘KP 2’, ‘KP 3’ and ‘KP 4’ – of coronavirus were detected through DNA sequencing of 42 people infected with COVID-19 at the National Public Health Laboratory, said Krishna Prasad Jaisi, the information officer at the laboratory.
DNA sequencing had been conducted after collecting samples from all seven provinces in April and May, according to Adhikari.
Of them, ‘KP 1’was detected in 12 cases, ‘KP 2’ in 17 cases, ‘KP 3’ in one and ‘KP 4’ in one case.
“This is not the new variant but the sub variant of the Omicron variant,” said Adhikari.
Dr Prakash Budhathoki, spokesperson at the Ministry of Health and Population, said that the sub variant KP is not contagious.
“The variant of the KP species is not infectious. Its effect is insignificant", he said.
