Former Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane, who is currently doing time in judicial custody over the Supreme Cooperative fraud case, has submitted a bank guarantee of Rs 27.484 million to the Rupandehi Court, seeking his release.
Lamichhane, who denies any wrongdoing, filed an application three days ago under Sections 68 and 71 of the National Criminal Procedure Code, 2017, arguing for his release on bank guarantee. "He has deposited the amount for his share of the liability and expressed willingness to compensate the victims, despite maintaining his innocence," a source close to the case told Nepalkhabar.
The Butwal High Court had earlier overturned a lower court’s decision to release him on Rs 10 million bail, ordering his re-arrest. Lamichhane challenged this in the Supreme Court, but his plea was rejected.
The case involves a total liability of Rs 109 million 900 thousand, with Lamichhane’s share fixed at Rs 27.484 million. The next hearing is pending as courts adjourned proceedings twice this week.
"The court will now decide whether to accept the bank guarantee and grant his release," the source added.
