Landslide in Ilam claims two lives; three still missing

At least two people died and three others went missing after being buried in a landslide in Ilam. It is feared that the floods and landslides have caused significant damage to life and property across various local levels of Ilam.

The local administration has stated that many individuals are missing due to the landslide. The District Police Office, Ilam, reported that people are missing from more than half a dozen locations in Ilam where landslides occurred due to continuous rainfall.

The landslide that occurred at Ghos in Ilam Municipality-6, last night buried the house of Dambar Bahadur Pakhring, resulting in two deaths and three people are still missing. Local youth Rewaj Tamang informed that preparations are underway to take three people injured in the landslide to the hospital for treatment. Locals reported that rescue operations are still ongoing.

According to preliminary reports, Suryodaya Municipality, Deumai Municipality, Mangsebung Rural Municipality, and Phakphokthum Rural Municipality have suffered significant loss of lives and properties due to the floods and landslides.

DSP Man Bahadur Rai, the Information Officer for the District Police Office, Ilam, said that data collection from all affected areas is still ongoing. The process of compiling detailed information about the incidents is underway. Since police teams have not yet reached all the incident sites, a full report is not yet available.

Police reported that landslides occurred in settlements in the following areas due to continuous rainfall, leaving some homes buried:

•    Suryodaya Municipality-1, Manebhanjyang

•    Mangsebung Rural Municipality-1, Patigaun

•    Deumai Municipality-5, Jhor and Dhuseni

•    Phakphokthum Rural Municipality-3, Ratmate

•    Ilam Municipality-5

DSP Rai confirmed that some individuals buried in the landslide are missing, while others were rescued and sent for medical treatment.

The official number of casualties and damages has not yet been publicly released. However, preliminary reports suggest that entire houses in some settlements have been buried by the landslide, displacing many families.
