CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli stated that his party would not run away from elections, asserting that the party has the capacity to secure a majority if polls are held in a fear-free environment.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony of the 11th UML General Convention at Sallaghari in Bhaktapur on Friday, Oli emphasized that the party's strength means it has no reason to avoid a vote.
"No one should assume that the UML, which has the power to secure a majority in an election free from fear, pressure, and revenge, will flee from the polls," Oli stated.
Questioning the election environment
Chairman Oli immediately questioned the current political climate, stating that the talk of elections is merely a distraction.
"But, is an election happening right now? No, there is only talk of an election to distract the country. Therefore, the House of Representatives must be reinstated," he said.
Accusations against the government
Oli leveled serious accusations against the current government, claiming it is not creating an electoral atmosphere but is instead conspiring against political parties.
"What is happening now? Instead of dialogue, there is prohibition, hatred, media trials, various rumors, and various anti-political party conspiracies," Oli asserted.
He questioned how an electoral environment could be fostered when leaders are being restricted and targeted.
"Instead of competition, there are threats, lawsuits, seizing of leaders' passports, and location restrictions," he added. "Is this how an electoral atmosphere is created?"
Call for peaceful polls
Oli concluded by aligning his party's demands with the will of the people, stressing the need for genuine democracy and a peaceful electoral process.
"The people's desire is clear: let there be democracy. Let there be elections in a free, fair and peaceful environment. Our stance is also the same," he affirmed.
